Anacaona, meaning "Golden Flower," was a Taíno queen, poet, and diplomat who led with grace before being executed by Spanish colonizers. Her story is one of courage, creativity, and resistance. I used the image of the actual Anacaona statue in Léogâne, Haiti, as inspiration remixing it through my lens with the radiant face of my dear Haitian friend, Taina Icart as the muse.
Though she ruled before the border ever existed, her memory lives on in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Her spirit still rises through the mountains and rivers of Quisqueya.
Anacaona still blooms.
