Meet The Artist

Mission Statement
My work is about being seen. Through portraits, color, and texture, I explore my Haitian heritage, the truth of mental health, and the quiet strength it takes to carry both. Some pieces are built from acrylic and broken glass, shaped from what has been fractured into something that holds light. Others are softer, more still. What stays the same is the intention: to honor where we come from, to make the inner life visible, and to remind anyone who stands in front of the work that they are worthy of being seen, and that we are meant to rise together. Anchored by my faith in Jesus, I make art as an act of remembrance, of healing, and of hope.
About the Artist
Darnelle Louis Jacques is a painter whose work exists at the intersection of faith, resilience, and emotional truth. A second generation Haitian American born and raised in Brooklyn New York, her artistic voice is deeply informed by her cultural heritage, lived experience, and an unwavering belief that creativity is both a calling and a gift from God.
Often described as self taught, Darnelle recognizes God as the true source of her ability to create. Her practice is guided by faith and grounded in community, with each piece approached as an offering meant to encourage, inspire, and heal. Haitian heritage plays a quiet but powerful role in her work, influencing her use of color, emotional intensity, and storytelling, while honoring ancestral strength and cultural memory.
Her return to art was shaped by a life altering car accident that redirected her path and deepened her commitment to painting as both process and purpose. In the aftermath of trauma, art became a tool for clarity and restoration. What began as personal healing evolved into a broader visual language that transforms pain into beauty and invites viewers into reflection and connection.
Darnelle’s work is known for its emotional honesty, layered color palettes, and spiritual depth. Each painting functions as a visual testimony, addressing mental health, perseverance, identity, and grace. Her work does not seek spectacle. It offers presence.
Her paintings have been featured in respected institutions including the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum and Conference Center, Future Gallery, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta UUCATL, ArtsXChange, Alpharetta Arts Center, Evelyn Rose Studios, Bookstore Gallery, and CBrooksGallery. These exhibitions reflect both the strength of her practice and the growing recognition of her voice within contemporary art spaces.
Through her collections and evolving body of work, Darnelle creates visual narratives that honor heritage, affirm faith, and hold space for healing. Her work invites viewers to pause, feel, and recognize that beauty often emerges from endurance.
Darnelle Louis Jacques continues to build a practice rooted in intention, culture, and spiritual conviction. Her art does not simply occupy space. It transforms it.
